![]() In the bible we hear both God's Law and God's Gospel. Jesus Christ and His work as Savior is the central topic of the whole bible. The bible, because it is God's word, is true in every word, chapter, verse, and syllable. It is the sole infallible rule and source for all teaching and practice. God is at work through these means of grace to deliver all the work and benefits of Christ's death and resurrection to you today in a concrete way. Jesus died for your sins and rose from the dead, but how does He deliver that life and forgiveness of His cross and resurrection to YOU today? Lutherans hold to the Bible based teaching that Baptism, the Lord's Supper, Confession & Absolution, and Preaching the Word are the Lord's "Means of Grace". Through the study of the Bible, you can seek the answer to this age-old question: “Who is Jesus?” We were not present when Jesus lived on this earth, but in the Bible we have the record of His birth, life, death on the cross, and resurrection. Who is Jesus?įor more than 2,000 years, people have asked this question. It is the sole rule and norm for Christian doctrine. The Bible is God’s inerrant and infallible Word, in which He reveals His Law and His Gospel of salvation in Jesus Christ. God creates faith in Christ and gives people forgiveness through Him. Those who hear this Good News and believe it have the eternal life that it offers. He sent Jesus, His Son, to love the unlovable and save the ungodly.īy His suffering and death as the substitute for all people of all time, Jesus purchased and won forgiveness and eternal life for them. God loves the people of the world, even though they are sinful, rebel against Him and do not deserve His love. The teaching of Luther and the reformers can be summarized in three phrases: Grace alone, Faith alone, Scripture alone. Our congregation accepts and preaches the Bible-based teachings of Martin Luther that inspired the reformation of the Christian Church in the 16th century. The three persons of the Trinity are coequal and coeternal, one God. The Holy Spirit, who creates faith through God’s Word and Sacraments. Jesus Christ, the Son, who became human to suffer and die for the sins of all human beings and to rise to life again in the ultimate victory over death and Satan and Amen.With the universal Christian Church, the Lutheran Church teaches and responds to the love of the Triune God: Do not let me seek preaching that satisfies my sinful desires, but give me preaching that will continually return me to the forgiveness You have given me through Your Son. Make me an ever-ready hearer of Your Word, O Lord. But after the Law comes the Gospel of peace, binding up the wounds inflicted by the Law with the sweet Gospel, which proclaims Christ’s forgiveness for all our sins. God’s Word sometimes cuts like a knife when it exposes our sin. ![]() ![]() We should judge preaching instead on God’s Word. We should not judge our pastors’ preaching on whether they say the things we personally like to hear. When we are with Jesus Christ, we will discover that it was all worth it.įaced with the thought of his imminent death, Paul impresses upon Timothy the importance of carrying on where Paul will leave off, preaching the Word faithfully. ![]() Paul gave these words to encourage Timothy, and us, that no matter how difficult the fight seems-keep fighting. Is your life preparing you for death? Do you share Paul’s confident expectation of meeting Christ? The good news is that the heavenly reward is not just for giants of the faith, like Paul, but for all who are eagerly looking forward to Jesus’ second coming. Thus he faced death calmly, knowing that he would be rewarded by Christ. 8 Now there is in store for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will award to me on that day-and not only to me, but also to all who have longed for his appearing.Īs he neared the end of his life, Paul could confidently say that he had been faithful to his call. 7 I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. 5 But you, keep your head in all situations, endure hardship, do the work of an evangelist, discharge all the duties of your ministry.Ħ For I am already being poured out like a drink offering, and the time for my departure is near. 4 They will turn their ears away from the truth and turn aside to myths. Instead, to suit their own desires, they will gather around them a great number of teachers to say what their itching ears want to hear. 3 For the time will come when people will not put up with sound doctrine. In the presence of God and of Christ Jesus, who will judge the living and the dead, and in view of his appearing and his kingdom, I give you this charge: 2 Preach the word be prepared in season and out of season correct, rebuke and encourage-with great patience and careful instruction.
